MANAGE YOUR WEBSITE WITH FTP

Who needs to use FTP?

If you are a client who does not use Microsoft FrontPage to edit your web site, Web-Hed suggests that you use an FTP program, like WS-FTP, to transfer your web files from your local computer to your web site on our servers.

What is FTP?

All FTP clients make use of a basic internet protocol called FTP. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and it enables users to connect to a remote computer and then send and receive files through that connection.

What do I need to use with FTP?

An FTP client or application that you install on your local computer. There are many different FTP clients. The Web Head Group suggests using WS-FTP. You can download a copy from the Internet.

Web Head Group will provide you with the connection information you need, which is

  • hostname - usually your web address, e.g. www.webheadgroup.com or ftp.webheadgroup.com
  • username
  • password

How do I configure WS-FTP?

  1. After you've installed WS-FTP, start the application.

    You should see this window pop up:


     

  2. Click on the New button.  All windows will be cleared.
  3. Type in any string in the Profile Name field.  Choose a name like "My Website" or "MyWebsite.com".
  4. Type in the hostname given to you by Web-Hed staff in the Host Name/Address field, e.g. ftp.web-hed.com.
  5. Make sure 'Automatic detect' is chosen for the Host Type.
  6. Enter in the username and password given to you by Web-Hed staff into the User ID and Password fields, respectively.
  7. Check the Save Password check box
  8. Click the Apply button to save you information
  9. Click the OK button to connect to your site

How do I transfer files from my computer to the server?

After you've connected to your site, you should see the window below pop up. The main window on your left is a directory listing of a folder on your computer. The main window on the right is a directory listing of a folder on the server where your web site is hosted.

To upload a file:

  1. Using the green arrows or the ChgDir button on the left side of the window, switch to the directory of the file you would like to upload.
  2. Select the file or files you would like to upload.
  3. Click the "->" button and the file will be transferred.

To download a file:

  1. Using the green arrows or the ChgDir button on the right side of the window, switch to the directory of the file you would like to download.
  2. Select the file or files you would like to download.
  3. Click the "<-" button and the file will be transferred. \

To create a directory on either your computer or the server:

  1. Using the green arrows or the ChgDir button on the left or right side of the window, switch to the directory where you want to create the new directory.
  2. Click the MkDir button on the right to create a new directory on the server or click the MkDir button on the left to create a new directory on your computer.

To close the connection and exit WSFTP:

  1. Click the Close button to close the connection.
  2. Click the Exit button to shut down WSFTP.

How do I check to see if my files were uploaded successfully?

Simply call up your website on your web browser and look for your changes. You may have to refresh the web page to see the changes.
